Keep your hay dry and your equipment out of the weather
Hay left out in the weather doesn't keep. Neither does a tractor sitting in the rain. A good post frame building protects what you've already put a lot of money and sweat into.
We're Virginia Post Frame, a Class A contractor based in Bedford. We build hay barns, tractor sheds and ag buildings with experienced Amish crews, so your building goes up fast and goes up right. We've built everything from a small 256 sq ft storage shed up to a 9,600 sq ft agricultural storage building.
What we build
Hay barns and hay storage
Three-sided hay sheds give you easy loader access and plenty of airflow. If you want more protection from blowing rain and snow, we can fully enclose the building. Either way, we'll size it around how much hay you put up and how you stack it, whether that's round bales or squares.
Tractor and equipment sheds
Open-front, multi-bay sheds where you can just pull in and park. We'll lay out the bays to fit your tractor, implements and trailers, and add enclosed bays if you want some of it behind a door.
Tractor sheds with feed storage
Open bays for equipment plus an enclosed room for feed, seed or tools, all under one roof.
Horse shelters and run-ins
Multi-stall shelters like our 3-stall horse shelter give your animals shade and a dry place to stand, with room to add hay or tack storage.
Large ag storage buildings
Need room for a lot of hay, equipment or both? We've built ag storage buildings up to 9,600 sq ft. If you need something bigger, call us and we'll talk it through.
Combination buildings
One building can hold hay on one end, equipment in the middle and a shop or feed room on the other. Tell us how you work and we'll design around it.
Why farmers call Virginia Post Frame
- Fast builds. We run multiple Amish crews, so your project doesn't sit waiting on one crew. How long it takes depends on the size and scope of your building, and we'll give you a straight answer when we quote it.
- Free quotes. Tell us what you need and we'll price it at no cost.
- Permits and site work handled. We take care of the permits (when your building needs them) and the site work, so you don't have to juggle extra contractors.
- Quality you can see. Amish craftsmanship on every build, with a permanent structure that adds value to your land.
- Design done in-house. We work with you directly on the drafting and design, and we can provide a structural engineered seal. We'll also point out ways to save a few dollars along the way.
- We roll our own metal. We own a standing seam machine and supply standing seam and metal board and batten, so you get good roofing and siding for less.
- Doors at wholesale. We're a Clopay garage door distributor, so if you want overhead doors on an equipment bay, you get them at wholesale on your build.

Frequently asked questions
How big can you build?
We've built everything from a 256 sq ft storage shed up to a 9,600 sq ft ag storage building. If you need something bigger, let's talk.
How much does a hay barn or equipment shed cost?
That depends on the size, height, how many sides you enclose, doors and your site. Call us with your rough size and we'll give you a real number. Quotes are always free.
How long does it take to build?
It depends on the size and scope of your building. A small tractor shed and a large ag storage building are very different jobs. We're known for fast builds because we run multiple Amish crews, and we'll give you an honest timeline for your project when we quote it.
Should my hay barn be open or enclosed?
A three-sided barn is easier to load and gets more airflow, which helps hay cure and keep. An enclosed barn gives you more protection from blowing rain and snow. We'll help you pick based on where the building sits and how you put up hay.
Can you add doors or an enclosed room?
Yes. We can add enclosed bays, a feed or tack room, and overhead doors. We're a Clopay garage door distributor, so doors on your build come at wholesale prices.
Do I need a building permit?
For farm buildings, usually not. Agricultural buildings typically don't need a building permit because of Virginia's agricultural exemption. Homes, like barndominiums, and residential accessory buildings, like a garage or shop at your house, do need permits. When a permit is needed, we handle it for you.
Can you provide engineered drawings?
Yes. We do the drafting and design in-house and can provide a structural engineered seal.
Do you do the site work?
Yes. We handle the site work, so you don't need to hire a separate contractor to get the ground ready.
Can I just buy the metal and build it myself?
Yes. We sell standing seam roofing and metal board and batten siding to DIYers, contractors and builders. See our Standing Seam & Board and Batten Supply page.
Ready to get your hay and equipment under a roof?
Tell us where your farm is and what you need to store. We'll give you a free quote, handle the permits and site work, and help you plan a building that fits your operation and your budget.
